Some breeds of heron are known for their ability to impersonate swamp reeds with astonishing effectiveness. Naturalists give accounts of having stared straight at a heron while searching for it and still confusing it for another of the tawny reeds that surrounded it. It spins to keeps its tawny underside facing a potential predator, and manages to puff and pinch in in just the right places to exactly emulate the dimensions and contours of a reed.
